Full Review of the Shimano MW80 Shoes
Unfortunately as mere mortals we are not able to control the weather, which is a shame because in winter, a cyclist’s feet can become incredibly cold and wet. Once your toes have felt the nip of winter they will never feel warm again, not until they are tucked up in some cosy slippers anyway. If you find yourself struggling to make it through your ride because of icy cold feet, Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes could solve your problems.
Feature Overview
- Use: Winter XC/Trail
- Cleat fitment: SPD
- Sole: Rubber
- Waterproof: GoreTex
- Gender: Male
Construction
The Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes are made with a resin sole, polyurethane coated leather insulated upper body and a waterproof boat. The seams are completely sealed, and the additional neoprene collar means that your toes are protected from dampness and cold.
Whilst the thick upper section does add much needed insulation, it can lead to the shoes being slightly smaller than anticipated so make sure you try them on. The toes and heel are protected further by durable reinforced armour, and there is a moulded inner sole for added protection.
Features
Although the Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes are the perfect addition to any cyclist’s winter wardrobe thanks to their incredible insulation and protection, they are surprisingly lightweight. The main features to these shoes include the fibreglass reinforced outersole, texon midsole, Gore-Tex waterproof exterior, moulded inner sole, reflective heel detailing, rubber tread pattern, and cuttable Velcro-style straps.
Disadvantages
Although the Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes are every rider’s must-have for winter, they are not ideal for summer as the feet get far too hot. An all year round pair of cycling shoes just would not provide the same comfort and warmth as these throughout winter so it is best to buy a second, lighter pair for the summer cycling season.
If you are fashion conscious then there might be one other disappointment as shoes do not really come in a range of colours or styles, what you see is what you get. They are also quite expensive, but if you value warmth and dryness, the Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes are definitely worth the extra few pennies.
Advantages
The neoprene collar around the top of the Shimano MW80 MTB cycling shoes is a stroke of genius as other Gore-Tex shoes make the mistake of not protecting this area, and leading to moisture entering the shoe. Being waterproof means that wet and muddy rides are no longer out of the question! However, as well as preventing the water, these shoes also keep your feet so incredibly warm, which is practically unheard of through a British winter.
Velcro straps are not something that were left back in the 1990’s, they prove to be an incredibly useful bit of fastening kit on these shoes as it means that riders do not have to remove any gloves to get their shoes fastened and ready to roll. There are other little features too which just really makes these cycling shoes that little bit extra special. The best price we could find it at is £127.48 from Wiggle Online Cycle Shop. These are the perfect set of shoes for cycling in the winter. They are made out of Goretex which prevents water from getting inside the boot. Other Goretex boots do not cover the top and thus allow moisture to get in. The MW80 does not have this problem and prevents water from getting in. Even when temperatures are below zero it keeps your feet warm.
If you live in any area that tends to be wet like I do. I live near San Francisco the Shimano MW80 Cycling Shoes are perfect for your needs.
They come with GoreTex insulation. The shoe is waterproof, I can vouch that it is true. They are seam sealed and the neoprene collar keeps out the cold.
These cycling shoes really keep your feet warm, even in the worst conditions. I wouldn’t consider any cycling shoe other than a Shimano MW80 if you live whether the weather is harsh.
I love the Shimano SH-MW80 all weather insulated GORE-TEX shoes. Not only are they waterproof but they keep your feed warm. I live in Boston and cycle during the colder months. They have proven to get the job done during November and December. I usually train indoors during January and February due to the snow. Even though it is now April and things are warming up, I will continue to use these shoes from Shimano since they keep my feet comfortable and dry. They are perfect for any season.
